Aja-Monet

Only 19 years old, Aja-Monet, is a New York City native spreading word and love through poetry and artistic development. Born and raised most of her life in East New York, Brooklyn, Aja-Monet represents a strong and beautiful woman of color reflecting internal conflictions, spiritual and Christian faith, and political and social commentary. She reflects a world in us not yet known. A vivid, raw, and real expression of her experience, Aja-Monet moves audiences of all ages, sexes, faith, and passions.

Aja-Monet is a poet/performer/writer and has performed in venues all across the city including the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe, the Bowery Poetry Club, Bar 13, Apollo, and many more as well as various colleges and universities, including Sarah Lawrence College, New York University, City College, Drew University, Marymount Manhattan College and more.

A prodigy of many sorts, Aja-Monet, has been personally mentored by some of the most influential and inspirational poets of the spoken-word poetry movement. Including Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets, Mahagony L Browne of Punani Poets, Lemon of Def Poetry, and Celena Glenn, ranked second in the International Poetry Slam among many other accomplishments. Monet's love for the art and its many participants is an awing reflection of the compassion and sincerity in the form.

Monet has been on the Urban Word NYC Slam Team in 2005 and represented New York City at the Brave New Voices Inter-National Poetry slam in San Francisco, reigning, as the first NYC team to ever win the National Poetry Slam Team title. She has been featured in the Say It Loud magazine, on the MNN television channel, and has been heard on New York City's WBAI radio station on numerous occasions. As well, Monet has had three Human Relations Media documentary-educational films feature her talent, drive, passion, and story. Aja-Monet has shared the stage and performed for the likes of Russel Simmons, Reverend Run, Foxy Brown, Doug E Fresh, Wyclef Jean as well as countless others.

Aja-Monet works as a mentor for Urban Word NYC, a non-profit organization that provides workshops and performance opportunities for inner-city youth. Monet currently attends Sarah Lawrence College as a Writing and Religion major while also volunteering time to reveal poetry to children whose parents have been or are currently incarcerated through a non-profit organization, In Arms Reach. As well as other mentoring and workshop opportunities, Monet takes a large interest and concern in the community of inner-city kids and their development.

Her poetry is a movement, a prancing bullet out of God's throat. Aja-Monet is stunningly effective and bright.
