NJ YOUTH S.L.A.M. TEAM
The Youth P.O.E.T (Positive Oral Expression & Theatre) Society was developed near the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year as an intervention and prevention initiative against gang affiliations, negative self images, lack of interest in education and destructive behavior.
Acting as a "revised" approach towards educational advancement, this initiative seeks to change negative behavior by increasing self esteem and positive self images, establish dynamic group affiliations and stronger support mechanisms, reinforcing a commitment towards higher academic achievement, while maintaining the safety of our youth by providing not only an outlet, but also a venue for creative artistic expression.
President Divad Sanders and Youth Program Director Mike Bertram have worked diligently to provide opportunities for youth to share concerns, ideas, dreams and aspiration, while establishing a network of resources to insure success and student achievement.
In addition, this program teaches youth how they are thinkers, leaders, students, writers, artists, etc. before they are "performance poets." The reinvention of "self" becomes one of the primary components regarding change in either negative behavioral patterns or low esteem and self image. The program has a rainbow of ethnicities, ages, grade levels and demographics. Artists range from 10-24 years of age; elementary school to college level; African American, Latino, Caucasian, Asian; this program encompasses it all!
On the road to the 2006 Brave New Voices National Youth Poetry Slam (www.youthspeaks.org) ten (10) youth poets have made their way to The 2006 NJ Youth Poetry Grand Slam Finals being held March 4 at The Forum Theatre in Metuchen, NJ (www.forumtheatrecompany.com). The battle for one (1) of five (5) spots to become a member of the first NJ Youth Poetry Slam Team to represent the state of New Jersey in its history.
Providing a extremely rewarding experience for our youth to gain valuable confidence, relationships, friendships and viable workshops regarding writing techniques, performance, publishing and critique.
Youth interested in becoming involved with events, performances, workshops, etc. must first (if under age 18) gain parental consent. We plan to change the world our youth live in by making reading, writing and learning fun for them again. Without a solid plan, acceptance of change, open mindedness, a will to make a difference and providing a strong, dependable support mechanism.
Our children are our future...our only one
