Words Hip Hop & Poetry Showcase

Words Hip Hop & Poetry evolved out of Words & All That!. The Legendary Showcase’s and Open mic’s held at the Nuyorican Poets’ café. ALL THAT! Hip Hop, Poetry & Jazz is an open jam session, which brings together emcees, poets and musicians from diverse musical and racial backgrounds. This forum is creatively open but structured so that you can have critically acclaimed jazz musicians as well as unknown emcees and poets performing on the same stage. Rocky LaMontagne created "All That!" IN 1993, while working at the Village Gate, to give young performers a space to work on their craft. "WORDS" was created in 1995 to give young up-and-coming poets & emcees the opportunity to showcase their work to an audience of their peers. These showcase’s and open mic’s have featured artists, such as Antonio Hart, Weldon Irvine, the Roots, Talib Kwali, Common, El p, Jean Grae, Mos Def, Willie Perdomo, Reg E. Gaines, Saul Williams, muMS the schemer, and Suheir Hammad, among others.

Words hip hop & poetry consist of emcees and poets performing with the trio from All that! hip hop poetry & jazz. These artists offer a culturally and artistically diverse show that consistently wows students and staff alike. The work performed by the artists is aimed to provoke thought and discussion.
